Abstract
986,787. Making sheet metal wheels; stamping; trimming-dies; bending. SHEFFIELD CORPORATION. Oct. 28, 1963, No. 42458/63. Headings B3A, B3E, B3Q and B3W. A method of making a sheetmetal pulley &c. wheel, Fig. 11, comprises drawing a blank into cup shape having a central disc 10, Fig. 1, and a cylindrical flange 18 with an offset 20 and a flared portion 19, sliding the offset portion 20 relatively to a camming punch 25, Fig. 2, to bulge or bend the flange while maintaining the flange-diameter adjacent the flared portion 19, and axially compressing the blank to overlap the bulged portion of the flange upon itself, forming one side of the wheelrim the other side of which is formed by the flared portion 19. The drawing tools, Fig. 1, include a stationary punch 11, a stripper 14, a work-holding ring 12 supported by pins 15 on a pressure cushion, and a drawing ring 13. During the operation of bulging the flange, the disc is located in an upper workholder 30 while the flared portion 19 is held in a recess 27 in a lower workholder 26 by radially movable elements 28. The workholders and elements 28 are moved downwardly, carrying the offset portion 20 of the flange into engagement with the camming section, Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown), of the punch 25, and then continuing until the disc 10 engages the end of the punch, Fig. 2. Pins 27<SP>1</SP> operated by a pressure cushion support the workholder 26. The flared portion 19 may then be trimmed by a punch-and-die set 37, 39, Fig. 4, having a workholder 43 and springs 41 between the workholder and a die-carrier 42. Overlapping the bulged flange is effected in several operations, in the first the flared portion 19 is clamped by radially movable members 49, Fig. 5, to a raised workholder 47 movement of which is restricted by a stop 48. A punch 45 supports the underside of the disc while a die 50 engaging the top side, is moved downwardly causing the flange to buckle outwardly. The workholders 47, 49 are moved downwardly by a ring 51 on the die 50. The flange adjacent its connection to the disc, is straightened in section by a stationary punch 56, Fig. 8, and a die 60, the work being held against a workholder 57 by radially movable members 58. Closing of the flange to form the upper wheel-rim follows, the blank being held between a punch 64, Fig. 9, and a downwardlymovable die 71 by a work-holding ring 67 and radially movable clamping dies 70. Finally, the periphery of the flared portion 19 is turned down and a hub-hole is punched in the disc by coaxially arranged cutting out and shaping dies, Fig. 10 (not shown); the wheel may then be welded to the hub 75.
