Abstract

An optical laser material comprises Al2O3 together with Mn4+, the amount of Mn4+ being in the range of one atom of Mn4+ in 102 to 106 atoms of Al. Mg2+ may be included, in atomic amount from one half to twice the amount of Mn4+. The material may be grown as a single crystal. Zinc, cadmium, lithium, berillium, calcium and strontium may be added, but are found not effective as charge compensators. Specification 962,732 is referred to.
