986, 265. Checking arrangements for magnetic tape data storage apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 17, 1961 [July 29, 1960], No. 25872/61. Heading G4C. Data as written in tracks 1-10 of magnetic tape is checked against the original data by use of read heads spaced a short distance downstream of the write heads and enabled by a second "beginning of data block" signal # on marker track 11 spaced a corresponding distance behind the first, α, which initiates writing. As described a word consists of seven octonary digits plus a row parity digit, and column parity bits, two digits plus their column parity bits being recorded in each tranverse position, and the parity bits are registered in flipflops when written, the flip-flops being reset by these bits as read. If all flip-flops are not reset then an alarm is given.
