Abstract

A solid medicinal dosage form is protected by a coating consisting essentially of from about 50 to about 95% w./w. of methyl cellulose and from about 5 to about 50% w./w. of a polyalkylene glycol having an average molecular weight of from 200 to 9000. The polyalkylene glycol may be polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol. The coating substances may be dissolved in a volatile solvent, e.g. a mixture of chloroform, methanol and water, and applied to the dosage form, such as a tablet, in a conventional manner. Optional ingredients are dyes, pigments, flavouring agents, e.g. peppermint oil, sweetening agents, e.g. sodium cyclamate, opacifiers such as titanium dioxide and ferric p oxide and substances such as vanilla and citrus to provide a pleasant aroma.
