Abstract

The process of the parent Specification in which an alkali metal silicate solution having a silica-alkali metal oxide weight ratio of 3:1-3,4:1 is contacted with carbon dioxide in an amount sufficient to convert substantially all the alkali in the silicate to alkali metal carbonate and thus form a silica hydrogel containing the dissolved carbonate, the resulting mass is commingled with a slurry containing an aluminium sulphate and unreacted aluminium hydroxide in which the mole ratio of sulphate to aluminium is less than 3:1 and at least 1,5:1 in an amount sufficient to provide up to 40% active alumina in the final catalyst, the carbon dioxide evolved is preferably recycled to the gelation step, a basic precipitant is added if necessary to the slurry to complete precipitation of alumina, and the resulting product is purified and dried, is modified in that clay is added to the reaction materials at any stage during the process prior to drying in a proportion constituting at most 50% by weight of the final product. The alkali metal silicate is preferably Na2SiO3 and the slurry may be formed either by reacting Al(OH)3 with less than the equivalent quantity of a mineral acid or by adding Al(OH)3 to an aluminium sulphate solution.
