Abstract

A sacrificial anode is made of a zinc-based alloy containing up to 5% total of one or more of Li, K, Mg, Ca, and Ba. The examples describe an alloy comprising: .Al.0.25-0.75% .Cd.0.05-0.2% .Si.less than 0.185% Zn+incidental impurities the remainder to which the alloy additions are made. These additions cause the evolution of hydrogen which disperses any oil films, e.g. in a tanker with sea-water ballast, and thus allows the protective process to continue unhindered.
