[Also in Division F1] A gas turbine engine, Fig. 1 (see Division F1), comprises a compressor 2 driven by a turbine 4 and a sleeved plate 9 carrying pinions 11 meshing radially inwardly with a pinion 13 on a collar 14 keyed to the compressor 2 and radially outwardly with a fixed ring gear 12 to form an epicyclic assembly, Fig. 1A, Plate 9, incorporates a centrifugal clutch. Fig. 10, comprising balls 15 engaging in hemispherical recesses in the driving shaft 5, springs 16 and adjustable stops 17. A freewheel device, Fig. 1D, comprising balls 19 in inclined slots 20 is provided between collar 14 and shaft 15. During low speed running the turbine 4 drives the compressor 2 through the step-up epicyclic gearing so that the compressor 2 rotates faster than the turbine 4. At a predetermined speed balls 15 of the centrifugal clutch disengage from shaft 5 to leave compressor 2 freewheeling on shaft 5. When the speed of the accelerating shaft 5 reaches that of the compressor 2 the freewheel engages so that the turbine 4 and compressor 2 rotate at the same speed.
