Abstract
984,144. Aerials. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. Dec. 21, 9621 [Dec. 22, 1961], No. 48282/62. Heading H4A. A Luneberg lens 1 having an outer reflective surface 8 is known to reverse the direction of polarization of a circularly polarized wave impinging thereon and since raindrops and clouds produce a similar effect it is also known to suppress such "reversed echoes " in radar apparatus, thus rendering a Luneberg lens ineffective as a target. According to the invention this " reversal " is prevented by means of an additional reflector disposed within the lens, this reflector comprising a plurality of parallel wires spaced apart by a distance of less than #/2 and dis- posed parallel to the reflective surface 8 of the lens 1 and at a distance therefrom of n#/8 or n#/4 where n is any odd integer. Thus in the case where the distance is n#/8 (and preferably where n=1) an incident circularly polarized wave is reflected as a linearly polarized wave and in the case of n# 4 (and preferably where n=1) the directions of rotation of the incident and reflected circularly polarized waves are the same.
