Abstract

<PICT:0983955/C1/1> <PICT:0983955/C1/2> <PICT:0983955/C1/3> <PICT:0983955/C1/4> To partially embed particulate material such as glass beads in a sheet of deformable material, such as silver chloride, the particulate material is located and retained in a single first plane, the sheet is disposed so that it registers therewith and is in a second plane parallel with the first plane and pressure is applied to the sheet and particulate material to partially embed the latter in the sheet. As shown in Figs. 3, 5, glass beads 31 are held in holes 54 countersunk at 53 in a steel die plate 52 by suction through bores 68 leading to intersecting slots 61 in a base plate 58 to which the die 52 is secured and/or notches 66 in bearing members 64 astride the slots 61 and with which they communicate. The sheet 30 of silver chloride is then laid thereover and the whole placed in a press to embed the glass beads 31. Upstanding pins 56 locate the sheet 30 and the upper press plate. As shown in Fig. 7, the glass beads are placed in holes 85 in a tray 74 slidably mounted in a recess 77 in a die block 71 from the position shown to a position where the holes 85 register with holes 72 in the floor 79 of the recess 77, both sets of holes being of greater diameter than that of the glass beads. The sheet 30 of silver chloride is placed under the die plate 71, the tray 74 moved so that the holes 85, 72 coincide and the beads pass through to lie on the sheet 30 while in the holes 72, the tray 74 is returned and a press guided over posts 82 is moved downwards so that pins thereon can enter the holes 72 to press the glass beads into the sheet 30. The glass beads may be etched in a mixture of NH4F and aqueous HF to assist locking of the beads in the sheet.
