Abstract

983, 823. Electric analogue calculating. ROBERTSHAW CONTROLS CO. May 17, 1963 [June 15, 1962], No. 19774/63. Heading G4G. An analogue multiplier comprises a voltage dividing network connected between an input terminal (to which a potential representing one variable is applied) and a reference terminal and having an intermediate output terminal, at least part of the network consisting of a radiant energy responsive variable impedance device disposed so as to receive radiant energy from a source, and a circuit whereby the intensity of radiant energy by the source may be varied in accordance with the value of another variable to be multiplied, whereby the potential on the output terminal represents a multiplicative function of the variables. In Fig. 1 a voltage divider comprising a fixed resistance R1 and a photosensitive resistance Rp is supplied with a square wave derived from R. F. generator 22 and clipper circuit 24. The junction 12 of the two resistances is coupled via capacitor C1 to a rectifying and integrating circuit and to an input terminal 40 of a D.C. amplifier 30. The other input terminal 42 of amplifier 30 is at a potential proportional to one of the input variables supplied at terminal 48, and the output of amplifier 30 controls the intensity of a neon bulb 60 which illuminates the resistance Rp. This circuit is self-adjusting so that the ratio of the voltage divider is made proportional to the input variable supplied at terminal 48. The second input variable is supplied at terminal 68 and the output, proportional to the product of the two inputs, is taken from terminal 64. Terminals 68 and 64 are coupled to the voltage divider through low pass filters which prevent the square wave from interfering with the input and output signals. In an alternative circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown), resistance R1 is replaced by a photosensitive resistance illuminated by a second neon bulb controlled by the output of amplifier 30 through an inverter so that its resistance changes in the opposite sense to the change in resistance of Rp.
