Abstract

983,820. Latches. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. April 5, 1963 [April 7, 1962], No. 13698/63. Heading E2A. An arrangement for the locking and unlocking of a plurality of closure devices on a motor vehicle comprises vacuum servomotors under the control of a central change-over valve which is mechanically connected with and operated by the locking means of the door situated adjacent to the drivers seat. As shown in Fig. 1 the installation comprises a pipe 11 connected at one end to an induction pipe of the engine, and at the other through a valve 12 to a vacuum reservoir 13 leading through pipe 14 to a change-over valve 16. Vacuum servomotors 19 to 21 operate locks 24 to 26 on the doors, motor 22 operates lock 27 of the boot and motor 23 operates a petrol tank locking device 28. The motor comprises parts 19<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>11</SP> to 23<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>11</SP> separated by diaphragms bearing rods 30 to 34 extending through parts 19<SP>1</SP> to 23<SP>1</SP>. Pipes 17 connect the valve 16 to parts 19<SP>1</SP> to 21<SP>1</SP>, and a pipe 18 connects all the parts 19<SP>11</SP> to 23<SP>11</SP> to the valve 16. In operation, actuation of lock 38 by key means causes, through movement of lever 37 and linkage 36, displacement of valve 16 resulting in blockage of communication between pipes 14, 17 and connecting pipes 14 to 18 leading to chambers 19<SP>11</SP> to 23<SP>11</SP>. Through valve 16 air at atmospheric pressure flows into pipe 17, and as there is a vacuum in pipe 18, thus all the diaphragms move to positions shown by dotted lines, thus moving the rods and their associated latching means to the locked position. Unlocking of the locking means 24 from outside is effected by unlocking lock 38 by key means, thus rotating lever 37 to move valve rod 16<SP>1</SP> through linkage 36. Valve 16 is thus actuated to establish connection between the vacuum reservoir and chambers 19<SP>1</SP> to 21<SP>1</SP>. Since the lock 27 of the boot is connected to atmospheric air by means of a vent and not to pipe 17 the lock is always closed on actuation of the central closure means, but this may be prevented by closing a valve 35 to cut off the part 23<SP>11</SP> from the reservoir 13. The boot lock is unlocked by key means. In the petrol tank lock the diaphragm is returned by spring means. The lock 38 may be operated externally by key means, from inside by a push rod 39, and also moves a handle connected to the rod 40. The lock 24 may be manually or mechanically operated independently of the central locking system.
