Abstract

983,773. Cardiac stimulators. COTELEC SOC. FRANCAISE D'ETUDES ET DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRONIQUES. May 16, 1963 [May 17, 1962], No. 19492/63. Heading A5R. An implanted cardiac stimulator is associated with a switching circuit controlled by an external monitoring device which causes the operation of the stimulator to stop if the heart is functioning normally. A pick-up device 2, strapped to the patient in the vicinity of the heart produces signals, in response to the heart's beating, which are amplified and rectified and then employed to charge a condenser 17. A variable leak 19 is connected across the condenser but, if the signals are received with sufficient frequency, a charge is built up which actuates a pulse generator 20 and high-frequency generator 3 to transmit a signal from an antenna 4 placed close against the patient's skin. A pick-up loop 7 receives this signal which is rectified at 10 and raises the base voltage of transistor 12, to cut off the transistor and stop the operation of the stimulator generator 14. If the action of the heart slows down or stops, no signal is passed by the controlling circuit, the base of the transistor goes negative, owing to its connection through a resistor 16 to the battery 13a. The transistor then passes current and the stimulator 14 commences to operate.
