Electrodes or briquettes of pitch containing carbonaceous material are made by heating the material and pouring the dough-like mass into a heated container 4, the bottom of which contains orifices 5 through which the material flows, under its own weight, to form strands of circular cross-section which break to produce cylindrical lengths and fall into a bath of water where they are cooled and on to a conveyer belt. The container 4 can be heated electrically or by passing hot oil through the hollow base and walls of the container, and can be vibrated by means of the motor 25 and eccentric cams.
