Abstract

A process for hardening epoxide resins comprises using as hardener a reaction product of at least one alpha, beta-alkylene imine which carries a hydrogen atom at the nitrogen atom and at least one primary and/or secondary mono- or poly-amine, the reaction product still containing a primary or secondary amino group. Specified imines are 2 - ethyl - ethylene imine, 2: 2 - di-methyl - ethylene imine, 2: 3 - dimethyl - ethylene imine, 2: 2: 3-trimethyl-ethylene imine, 2-methyl - 3: 3 - diethyl - ethylene imine, 2: 2 - dimethyl - 3 - n - propyl - ethylene imine, 2 - phenyl - ethylene imine and 2: 3 - diphenyl - ethylene-imine. Specified amines are ethanolamine, diethanolamine, p-aminophenol, ethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, 3: 31-diaminodipropyl ether, diamino diethyl sulphide, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, 4: 41-diamino-dicyclohexyl-methane, phenylene diamine, 4: 41-diamino diphenyl methane, xylylene diamine and naphthylene diamine. Specified epoxy resins are the reaction products of epichlorhydrin with polyhydric phenols and alcohols, e.g. 4: 41-dihydroxydiphenyl dimethyl methane, dihydroxy diphenyl methane, dihydroxy-di-o-cresy. methane and 1: 4-dihydroxybutane. Fillers, e.g. quartz powder, may be included in the reactive composition. In the examples, epoxy resins made from epichlorhydrin and:-(1) and (7) 4: 41-dihydroxy-diphenyl methane; (2) and (5) di-o-cresyl methane and (3) and (6) a novolak are cured by reaction with:-(1) and (4) a reaction product of monoethanolamine with ethylene imine; (2) and (5) a reaction product of hexamethylene diamine with ethylene imine; (3) and (6) a reaction product of diethylene triamine with ethylene imine and (7) a reaction product of monoethanolamine with ethylene imine together with a reaction product of m-phenylene diamine with ethylene imine.
