Abstract

L-Glutamic acid fermentation broths are purified by adding one or more polyoxyethylene alkylamine or polyoxyethylene lauryl ether surfactants having a Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance of more than 15 to the crude broth, heating said broth to agglomerate and precipitate impurities such as bacterial cells and the like present in a suspended form, and filtering the broth to obtain a transparent filtrate having a high purity. Hydrophilic Lipophilic Balance is defined by the formula <FORM:0982712/C2/1> in which "Mw" represents the molecular weight of the hydrophilic radical of the surface-active agent and "Mo" represents the molecular weight of the lipophilic radical of the surface-active agent. Suitable surfactants are polyoxyethylene stearylamines having 10 to 30 oxyethylene units, polyoxyethylene oleylamines having 5 to 15 oxyethylene units and polyoxyethylene lauryl ethers having 10 to 30 oxyethylene units.
