Abstract

A method of motion estimating between a current and a previous frame of an image signal divides the current frame into a plurality of equal-sized search blocks. A plurality of search regions are formed within the previous frame 410, wherein each search region corresponds to a search block and whether each search block is a boundary block or an inner block is determined, 440, based on the shape data of the current frame, wherein a boundary block is a search block containing background pixels as well as object pixels and an inner block is a search block containing object pixels only. Based on the determination result, one of a block matching and boundary matching motion estimation processes 420, 430, is selectively performed for each search block to thereby provide a motion vector of each search block.
