Abstract
The invention comprises fluoroalkyl siloxanes of the formula <FORM:0982429/C3/1> where X is halogen or a lower alkoxy group containing less than 7 carbon atoms, R is a perfluoroalkylethyl group, n has an average value of 2-3 inclusive, and m has an average value of 1-5 inclusive. They are prepared by reacting the compound HO[RSi(CH3)O]mH (a) with a compound RpSiY4-p, or (b) with a compound RpSi(OR1)3-pCl, or (c) with a compound RpSi(OR1)4-p, where p is 0 or 1, Y is halogen, and R1 is lower alkyl. A solvent may be used, and an acid-acceptor is required in (a) and (b), and a catalyst, e.g. an amine, or a lead, tin, or iron carboxylate, in (c). When the compounds of the invention are hydrolysed and condensed under acid or neutral conditions, tough, flexible resins are obtained which are resistant to heat, oil, and solvents. In the examples CF3CH2CH2 SiCl2O[CF3CH2CH2Si(CH3)O]m SiCl2CH2CH2CF3, where the value of m lies between 3 and 4, is prepared by method (a) using a -picoline as acid acceptor, and hydrolysed and condensed to a resin, the compounds (C2H5O)SiO[CF3CH2 CH2Si (CH3)O]3Si(OC2H5)3, (C4H9O)3SiO[C2F5CH2CH2 Si(CH3)O]5SiO(C4H9)3, CF3CH2CH2Si(OCH3)2O [C10F21CH2CH2Si(CH3)O] Si(OCH3)2CH2CH2CF3, and CF3(C2H5)CFCH2CH2Si (OC6H11)2O[(CF3)2 CHCH2Si(CH3)O][C3F7CH2CH2Si (CH3)O]3Si (OC6H11)2CH2CH2CF(CF3) C2H5, are prepared by method (b) using tetramethyl guanidine as acid acceptor, and CF3CH2CH2Si(OCH3)2\t O[C2H5 (CH3)CFCH2CH2Si(CH3)O]4Si (OCH3)2CH2CH2 CF3 is prepared by method (c) and hydrolysed and condensed.
