Abstract

A stabilizer combination which improves the resistance of olefine polymers to deterioration in physical properties on exposure to heat comprises an organic phosphorous acid and a Group II metal salt of an organic non-nitrogenous monocarboxylic acid having 6 to 24 carbon atoms, said stabilizers being compatible with the polyolefine and having a vapour pressure such that they are not readily volatile at temperatures at which the polyolefine may be worked. The organic phosphorous acids have the formula <FORM:0982208/C3/1> where <FORM:0982208/C3/2> is an organic radical or radicals attached to the phosphorus atom through an oxygen or carbon atom. The <FORM:0982208/C3/3> radical can form a heterocyclic ring including the phosphorus atom or it can be two organic radicals attached through carbon or oxygen, and it can also include an additional OH group. The following formulae fall within the above general formula for such acids <FORM:0982208/C3/4> <FORM:0982208/C3/5> <FORM:0982208/C3/6> <FORM:0982208/C3/7> <FORM:0982208/C3/8> where R1 and R2 represent monovalent organic aliphatic, aromatic and non-aromatic alicyclic hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radicals having 1 to 30 carbon atoms, and R3 and R4 represent bivalent organic aliphatic, aromatic or non-aromatic alicyclic hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radicals having 2 to 30 carbon atoms and "n" is 1 to 30. Long lists of phosphorous acids are given including phosphites, phosphonites, phosphonous and phosphinous acids and compounds such as <FORM:0982208/C3/9> A long list of organic non-nitrogenous monocarboxylic acids is given. The stabilizer combination of the invention may be used in conjunction with other olefine polymer stabilizers, e.g. phenols, orgnic triphosphites, thiodipropionic esters, organic mercaptans and organic polysulphides, long lists of which are given, may be used. The preferred stabilizer system comprises an organic phosphorous acid, a salt of an organic acid with a polyvalent metal, a polyhydric phenol, a triphosphite and a thiodipropionic acid ester. Polymers mentioned which may be stabilized are polymers and copolymers of propylene with copolymerizable monomers such as ethylene and butene, mixtures of polyethylene and polypropylene, and polymers and copolymers of ethylene, butene-1, 3-methyl-butene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1 and styrene.
