Abstract
A heat hardenable resinous composition comprises a butadiene resin and an interpolymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid amide with at least one other monomer having a CH2=C< group, said interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure <FORM:0981931/C3/1> where R is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 5 carbon atoms and R1 is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 10 carbon atoms. Said interpolymer may be prepared by polymerizing the amide with the CH2=C<containing monomer and then reacting the polymer produced with an aldehyde, preferably in the presence of an alcohol. Lists of amides and monomeric compounds having at least one CH2=C< group are given. Preferably the interpolymer should contain from 2 to 50% by weight of the amide. Alternatively the interpolymer may be prepared by polymerizing an N-alkoxyalkyl amide of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with one or more of the CH2=C< monomers, no reaction with an aldehyde being necessary. The resin blended with the interpolymer may be any butadiene resin, preferably a styrene-butadiene resin. Such resins may be modified with epoxidized triglyceride oils or acids. From 5 to 95% of the butadiene resin is blended with from 95 to 5% of the interpolymer; the method of blending may be in a mixer without a solvent or by incorporating the two components in a suitable solvent or dissolving each component in a solvent and combining the two solutions. In the coating composition of the invention other resinous materials may be included, e.g. vinyl resins, alyd resins, epoxy resins, amine resins, phenolic resins and polyacrylate resins. Low temperature cure blends of the interpolymer with an adduct of a hydroxyl-containing polymer with a carboxylic acid anhydride may be used either together with said interpolymer or in place of said interpolymer. Specifications 826,652 and 920,809 are referred to.ALSO:Electrolytic tin plate and glass are coated with a heat hardenable resinous composition comprising a butadiene resin and an interpolymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid amide with at least one other monomer having a <FORM:0981931/B1-B2/1> group, said interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure <FORM:0981931/B1-B2/2> where R is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 5 carbon atoms and R1 is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing up to 10 carbon atoms. The preferred butadiene resin is a butadiene-styrene resin and such resins may be modified with epoxidized triglyceride oils or acids. Other resinous materials such as vinyl resins, alkyd resins, epoxy resins, amine resins, phenolic resins and palyacrylate resins, may be added to the coating composition. In the examples solutions of the coating compositions are drawn on the electrolytic tin plate or glass and then (a) baked at 400 DEG F. and then boiled in water or (b) merely cured at 400 DEG F. Cans may be formed from the coated tin plate. Specifications 826,652 and 920,809 are referred to.
