The mechanical seal according to the parent Specification is modified in that the rates of the effective sealing area of the abutting faces to the effective area at each end of the seal subject to the interior or exterior pressure is 1:1 or 100:86 or any value therebetween on one side of the seal and 1:1 or 100:50 or any value therebetween on the other side of the seal. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 807,541.
