Abstract

A composition suitable for treating textiles comprises a water-soluble or water-dispersible surface-active amphipathic compound which contains a hydrocarbon radical having at least 8 carbon atoms and a siloxane oxyalkylene block or graft copolymer. The amphipathic compound may be an anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active compound containing a hydrocarbon radical having at least 8 carbon atoms, suitable amphipathic compounds being condensation products of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cyclo-aliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic carboxylic acids, amides, amines or hydroxyl or thiol compounds, sulphated oils and waxes and lubricating oil containing a condensation product of 1 molecular proportion of a fatty alcohol with 1.5-5 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide and a condensation product of 1 molecular proportion of a fatty alcohol with 15-30 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide. Suitable siloxane oxyalkylene block copolymers are those having the formulae R1O(SiR2O)pR11(OSiR2)pOR1\h (1) and R111[(OSiR2)pOR]a (2) in which R is a hydrocarbon residue, R1, R11 and R111 are polyether residues having functionalities of 1,2 and more than 2, respectively, (a) is an integer of 3 or more and p is an integer equal to 4-12 and suitable siloxane oxyalkylene graft copolymers are those having the formula <FORM:0981814/C3/1> in which the siloxane chain is composed of random assembly of the units in brackets, (C+d) lies between 10 and 30, c is at least 2 and no greater than d, RIV is an alkyl group with up to 8 carbon atoms, (OCnH2n is a polyether residue composed of oxyethylene and oxypropylene units in a proportion between 1:2 and 2:1 and having a molecular weight of 400-3000, and the weight ratio of total polyether blocks to the siloxane block in the copolymer is between 2 and 5. The composition which may be applied to the textiles in the form of an aqueous solution or dispersion may also contain water insoluble oil or waxy lubricants and other additives. Specifications 802,467, 802,688, 804,369, 880,022, 954,041 and 963,437 are referredALSO:Textile materials, e.g. fibres and filaments made from polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene, are lubricated and rendered antistatic by applying thereto 0.05-2% by weight of a water soluble or water dispersible surface active amphipathic compound which contains a hydrocarbon radical having at least 8 carbon atoms and 0.02/D.d to 0.1/D.d% by weight, where D is the fibre denier and d is the fibre density in gms per cubic centimeter, of a siloxane oxyalkylene block or graft copolymer. The amphiphatic compound may be an anionic, cationic or non ionic surface active compound containing a hydrocarbon radical having at least 8 carbon atoms suitable amphiphatic compounds being condensation products of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic carboxylic acids, amides, amines or hydroxyl or thiol compounds, sulphated oils and waxes and lubricating oil containing a condensation product of 1 molecular proportion of a fatty alcohol with 1.5-5 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide and a condensation product of 1 molecular proportion of a fatty alcohol with 15-30 molecular proportions of ethylene oxide. Suitable siloxane oxyalkylene block copolymers are those having the formulae <FORM:0981814/D1-D2/1> and <FORM:0981814/D1-D2/2> in which R is a hydrocarbon residue, R1, R11 and R111 are polyether residues having functionalities of 1, 2 and more than 2 respectively, (a) is an integer of 3 or more and p is an integer equal to 4-12 and suitable siloxane oxyalkylene graft copolymers are those having the formula <FORM:0981814/D1-D2/3> in which the siloxane chain is composed of a random assembly of the units in brackets, (c + d) lies between 10 and 30, c is at least 2 and no greater than d, RIV is an alkyl group with up to 8 carbon atoms, (OCnH2n)m is a polyether residue composed of oxyethylene and oxypropylene units in a proportion between 1 : 2 and 2 : 1 and having a molecular weight of 400-3000, and the weight ratio of total polyether blocks to the siloxane block in the copolymer is between 2 and 5. Numerous examples of suitable siloxane oxyalkylene block and graft copolymers are give. The treating composition which may be applied in the form of any aqueous solution or dispersion may also contain conventional water insoluble oil or waxy lubricants and other additives. Specifications 802,467, 802,688, 804,369, 880,022, 954,041 and 963,437 are referred to.
