Abstract
Halo-olefines are prepared by passing a hydrogen halide with an acetylenically unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon over a halogenated catalyst obtained by contacting a halogenatable inorganic oxide with a compound containing at least two halogen atoms on the same carbon atom. Before the halogenation the inorganic oxide may be treated with an alkali or alkaline earth metal compound. Specified inorganic oxides are alumina, boria, silica, titania, zirconia and ferric oxide; specified halogenating compounds are CCl4, CHCl3, CH2Cl2, CCl2F2, CCl3Br, COCl2, CH2F2, CHF3 and CF4. The catalysts of Specifications 953,187 and 981,691 may be used. An example prepares vinyl chloride and some CH3CHCl2 from C2H2 and HCl; other specified reactants are methylacetylene, HBr, HI and HF. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 921,796.
