Abstract

981,640. Moulding decorated thermoplastic containers. METAL BOX CO. Ltd. Oct. 9, 1963 [Nov. 1, 1962], No. 41418/62. Heading B5A. A method of producing an exteriorly decorated container of synthetic organic thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene, polystyrene or rigid polyvinyl chloride, comprises making a preform, printing on an exterior portion of the preform and heating it to a temperature at which it will be deformable, and reforming the preform in a mould by application of internal pressure. The preform is preferably made by blow moulding. The printing may be applied by offset printing, a screen process or transfer labelling. Part of the finished container may be of smaller cross-section than the original preform since shrinking occurs on heating. The internal pressure may be provided by air, hydraulic or mechanical pressure. The temperature of the mould may be controlled during reforming of the container.
