Abstract

980,928. Solid rubber tyres. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. May 10, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 17990/62. Heading B7C. In a wheel comprising a metal rim 6 to which is vulcanized a solid rubber tyre 5, the tyre rubber is reinforced by lengths of filamentary material 7, each between “ inch and 3 inches long, distributed throughout the tyre. The tyre may be made of a single rubber ply wrapped once around the rim and in which filamentary material is randomly distributed, as shown in Fig. 2, or of one continuous ply which is wrapped around the rim until the wheel has a desired external diameter, or of several separate plies, or of a ply or plies wrapped with one edge against the rim. Different reinforcing filamentary materials, such as rayon, nylon, or polyester filament, flock, or yarn, or brass-covered steel wire, may be used in different plies. The filamentary material may be orientated at any desired angle to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre, as by calendering, and plies in which the filamentary material is biased may alternate with plies in which it is orientated circumferentially or laterally.
