Abstract
980,799. Abrasive tools. DIAMANT BOART. Oct. 15, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 39006/62. Heading B3D. A drill bit comprises sectors 2 mounted on a support 1 and separated by grooves 3 for the passage of cooling fluid, each sector comprising, forwardly in relation to the direction of rotation of the bit, a first portion 6 composed of an agglomerate of particles such as hard metallic carbide, such portion being followed by a remaining portion 7 composed of a diamond-set concretion. The sectors may be formed separately as shown or, they may form part of a circular bit having grooves the depth of which is a fraction of the thickness of the bit. In a modification an intermediate portion is provided between the portions 6, 7, this portion being formed of an agglomerate of diamond grains and tungsten carbide particles set in a binder; the particle size of the carbide may be different from that used in the portion 6. The duct 5 may be arranged eccentrically in the support 1 and the sectors instead of being of rectangular cross-section shown, may be of circular or elliptical section. The sectors may also have a positive or negative circumferential rake or clearance starting from their cutting edge 4.
