980, 396. Reactor pressure vessels. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 2, 1964 [Jan. 4, 1963], No. 592/63. Heading G6C. A nuclear reactor steel pressure vessel is formed of inner and outer skins separated by and welded to a steel framework. As shown, the reactor core 15 is mounted within the inner and outer steel skins 2, 6 which are weldedto the steel framework 11 in the annular space between 2 and 6. The vessel is surrounded by the concrete shield 18 and the core is cooled by gas which enters and leaves through the coaxial pipes 17, 19. To prevent the growth of thermal gradients across the framework 11 heated gas is passed into the annular space between the skins. The coolant gas passes round the outside of the moderator, so cooling it, and into the fuel channels 21 through the openings 20. The gas leaves the channels through the upper openings 23 into the leader 16.
