Abstract
The invention comprises compounds containing one or more units of formula <FORM:0980120/C2/1> where R is a hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the total carbon atoms in R1 and R11 not exceeding 20, Y is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical (which may be halogenated) having n free valencies, x is 0 or 1 and n is 2, 3 or 4. When n is 2 the compounds may have the formula <FORM:0980120/C2/2> When n is 2 the compounds may have the formula <FORM:0980120/C2/3> where m is 1 or more and Z is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or the radical <FORM:0980120/C2/4> The compounds are prepared by reacting a polymercapto compound of formula <FORM:0980120/C2/5> or an alkali metal salt thereof, with a compound of formula <FORM:0980120/C2/6> where X is halogen or a hydroxyl radical. In examples, compounds are obtained by reacting a ,a 1 - dimercapto - p - xylene with dibutyltin oxide, alone and with lauryl mercaptan, by reacting a ,a 1-dimercapto-p-xylene with dioctyltin oxide, and by reacting a ,a 1-dimercapto-p-xylene with dibutyltin dichloride, alone and with dibutyltin dilauryl mercaptide.ALSO:The invention comprises polymeric compounds containing units of formula <FORM:0980120/C3/1> where R is a hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R1 and R11 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl radicals containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, the total carbon atoms in R1 and R11 not exceeding 20, Y is an aromatic hydrocarbon radical (which may be halogenated) having n free valencies, x is 0 or 1 and n is 2, 3 or 4. When n is 2 the polymeric compounds have the formula <FORM:0980120/C3/2> where m is a number up to 100 and Z is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical or the radical <FORM:0980120/C3/3> The compounds are prepared by reacting a polymercapto compound of formula <FORM:0980120/C3/4> or an alkali metal salt thereof, with a compound of formula <FORM:0980120/C3/5> or <FORM:0980120/C3/6> where X is halogen or a hydroxyl radical. The extent of polymerization may be controlled by including in the reaction mixture up to 10 mole per cent based on the polymercapto compound of a chain stopping agent of formula R111SH, where R111 is a hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 18 carbon atoms which may be halogenated. The compounds of the invention may be incorporated in amounts of 0.1 to 5% by weight in halogenated resins as stabilizers. Resins which may be stabilized are polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, and compositions containing polyvinyl chloride and a copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene. In examples, polymeric compounds are obtained by reacting a ,a 1-dimercapto-p-xylene with dibutyltin oxide, alone and with lauryal mercaptan, by reacting a ,a 1-dimercapto-p-xylene with dioctyltin oxide, and by reacting a ,a 1-dimercapto-p-xylene with dibutyltin dichloride, alone and with dibutyltin dilauryl mercaptide; the first polymeric compound is used to stabilize polyvinyl chloride.
