In a calculating or similar business machine, having a printing mechanism and a shoot for receiving a manually inserted record material (e.g. cheque) for printing upon, a device for ensuring the precise positioning of the record material with respect to the printing mechanism and including a marginal abutment for one margin of the record material located within the shoot, the abutment being shiftable longittudinally of the shoot from a first position to a second position precisely defined with respect to the printing mechanism, and a shifting mechanism for the abutment actuated at the commencement of each cycle of machine operation, whereby record material manually inserted in the shoot with one of its margins located between said first and second positions of the abutment will be shifted longitudinally of the shoot to locate said one margin in said second position. The shoot 25 comprises front and rear plates 28, 27, spaced apart by strips 30, 32. The front plate 28 includes a transparent portion 29. The front and rear plates are cut-away at 28b to receive the marginal abutment 34. The latter is reduced at its lower end 34a to slide between said plates and has V-shaped portions 35, 36, Fig. 4 (not shown), adapted to engage the marginal edge of the cheque. The marginal abutment is adjustably secured to an L-shaped rod 40, which is moved to the left at the start of each machine cycle, whereby the cheque is registered accurately in position with respect to the printing mechanism 33. The front and rear plates are cut-away at 28a, in the region of the printing mechanism and platen 14. In addition, the front plate 28 is slatted at 28c to form clamping fingers 55. Said fingers are pushed out of the plane of the front plate by reciprocating slides 56a, to clamp the cheque against the platen 14 and hold it in its registered position during printing. The slides are slotted at 57, Fig. 5, and are mounted on fixed studs 58. They are held in their inoperative position by springs 59 attached to the foremost studs 58 and studs 60 on the slides. The slides are reciprocated by two levers 62 pivoted at 61. The upper end of each lever is attached to the stud 60, on the associated slide, by a spring 65. In operation, a main shaft 15 is oscillated once for each machine cycle by a handle or an electric motor. A cam 50 fixed to said main shaft reciprocates the rod 40, to position the cheque, through the agency of linkage 41, 46-52, Fig. 1 (not shown). Cam arms 66 on said main shaft co-operate with the levers 62 whereby the slides 56a are reciprocated. Finally, hammers 18 are released near mid-cycle of machine operation to strike selected type members 19.
