Line printing apparatus for printing in a variable line pitch comprises a synchronizing pulse generating pattern which rotates in synchronism with the printing types 2 to produce pulses with a variable interval between pulses. In Fig. 1,the pattern consists of lines 5 on a drum 4, the pitch between the lines varying linearly along the drum. The lines 5 are detected photoelectrically by a head 7, 8, the position of which along the drum 4 is adjustable to vary the interval between pulses. A mark 5<SP>1</SP> on drum 4 produces a start-printing signal from a photoelectric reading head 10,11. The pulses from heads 10,11 and 7, 8 are fed to a unit 12 to energize electrostatic printing heads 3 at the appropriate times in accordance with input information 15. The arrangement enables various mechanical errors to be corrected for, and for the distance between the lines of print to be varied. Additional means (not described) are provided to keep the ratio of the speeds of type drum 1 and recording sheet 17 constant during operation with a given pitch between printed lines. The printing may alternatively be done by electromagnetic printing hammers and the reading heads may be magnetic or be brushes sensing electrically conducting regions on drum 4. The drum 4 may be replaced by a patterned disc, maybe with curved strips. Each column of type may include several complete sets of type members.
