A charging device for charging porous filling into a drainage channel comprises a hopper 1 supported on the ground with a shoot 3 which depends from the hopper into the channel and an adjustable plate 5 which determines the level 11 of the material 10 deposited in the channel. The hopper could be supported on wheels or skids and the device could be used in conjunction with methods of draining using hard or plastic tubes or shapes formed during operations. The hopper may be sideways adjustable relative to the skids or wheels on which it is supported.
