978,742. Direction-finding and echo ranging by radio and sound waves. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1961 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 36480/64. Divided out of 978,741. Heading H4D. The disclosure is that of Specification 978,741 together with the alternative use of radio waves and with an alternative indication of echo range and bearing by cathode-ray tube; the claims are directed to the direction-finding aspect. The beat frequency audio signals corresponding to the two spaced receivers are applied to a modulator 38 affording sum- and difference-frequencies; unit 39 incorporates a bank of filters covering the sum-frequency band and a cathode-ray tube having a time base synchronized with the sampling of the filters to afford a range display. Unit 40 is similarly arranged for the difference-frequencies and affords a bearing display. A single, type B, display may be arranged.
