Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of water-soluble derivatives of polyene antibiotics which consists in reacting a polyene antibiotic in an aqueous alkaline medium with a polysaccharide oxidised to a polydialdehyde. Specified polyene antibiotics are pimaricin, nyastatin, trichomycin and amphotericin. Specified polysaccharides which are oxidised are inulin, dextran, xylon, levan, amylose, and starch. The degree of oxidation of the polysaccharide may be such that at least 50% of the 1:2 glycol groups present in each saccharide unit are oxidised to dialdehyde. The water-soluble polyene antibiotic derivatives may be used in pharmaceutical compositions containing solid or liquid carriers. Specifications 714,189, 775,485, 795,482 and 844,289 are referred to.
