Abstract

977,452. Boring earth etc.; wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 10, 1963, No. 40044/63. Heading E1F. An underground formation is treated to prevent liquid loss from a hole 1 which penetrates a cavity 4 in the formation 2 by injecting through the hole into the formation a suspension having the property of readily depositing particles so that particles are deposited as the suspension flows through the cavity, stopping injection after passage through the cavity is blocked by the particles, and injecting through the hole into the cavity a liquid having a plastering effect. When, during drilling, the bit penetrates the cavity the drill string is removed from the hole, the bit is removed and the string is again run into the hole with its lower end above the entrance 5 of the cavity. If the bit has large sized mud outflow openings, removal of the bit is unnecessary. The suspension which comprises for example oil or water mixed with sand, barite, ilmenite or magnetite is pumped into the cavity down the string. When a mass 7 of particles has been deposited pumping of the suspension is stopped, any particles which have deposited in the bottom of the hole being removed by circulating liquid through the string and the annulus surrounding it. To reduce the number of particles deposited in the hole liquid may be fed down the annulus and up the string immediately after pumping of the suspension or a packer may be set in the hole immediately below the entrance 5. Drilling mud or similar liquid with a plastering effect is used to form the cake 8 sealing off the rest of the cavity and this mud may be used as the liquids for removing particles from the hole.
