A hurdle rail 2 or upright has a flexible cover 8 (of extruded or moulded natural or synthetic rubber or polyvinyl chloride) formed internally with a groove or grooves 18-21 so as to leave a cavity or cavities between itself and the post or upright. The cover for the top rail is formed with an extension 22 in the region of a lower edge to provide additional protection.
