Abstract
977,240. Trimming moulded articles. BROWN MACHINE CO. June 20, 1963 [June 20, 1962; April 23, 1963], No. 24573/63. Heading B5A. In a machine for trimming moulded articles a continuous chain conveyer 19 runs over sprocket mounted upon shafts 15, 16, 21, and is driven, in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, by the downstroke of a piston-operated rack 31 which engages a gear 30 on shaft 16, the rack being disengaged on the upstroke by a suitable clutch, to provide a dwell period for the conveyer. Containers J, carried on saddles 39, are first passed between upper cutting dies 40, 40a, 40b, mounted on a fixed plate 42, and lower dies 50<SP>1</SP>, 53, mounted upon a plate 49 which is vertically reciprocated by a cylinder 47. An arm 112 depends from the lower die and contacts switches SW-6 and SW-3. The container then passes through a deburring station 38 comprising a plate 78 (see Fig. 4), movable into engagement with the rear of the container by a piston 71 and a deburring tool 56, carried by a block 58 on an arm 59, which is moved to engage the mouth of the container by pivoting the arm 59 about a shaft 60 by means of a piston 70. The deburing tool is rotated by an electric motor 64 and carries a pilot tip which protrudes into the container, see Fig. 6 (not shown). An electrical control system (Fig. 7, not shown) governs the sequence of operations. Starting from the position shown in Fig. 1 the lower die is raised, thus actuating switch SW-6 by means of arm 112 which in turn actuates motor 64 and both piston 70, to forward the burring tool, and cylinder 81 to forward the plate 78. Actuation of switch SW-6 also causes the rack 31 to be raised. The forward movement of arm 59 depresses air valve 119 which permits a stream of air to flow through bore 75, of the deburring tool, into the interior of the container to prevent accumulation of chips therein. The return of the lower die is implemented when arm 112 actuates switch SW-3. The switch SW-6 is subsequently reactuated and retracts both the deburring tool and the plate 78 and actuates cylinder 33, thus lowering the rack 31 to move the conveyer one increment to the left. Upon full downward movement of the rack a safety switch SW-1 (see Figs. 5 and 2, not shown ), is actuated which enables the platen to be reraised to initiate another cycle. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 8), both the conveyer and the die assembly are driven by the same electric motor to ensure the required co-ordination of operations. The belt 199, driving conveyer 134, is driven by the output shaft 201, of a transmission assembly 202 which intermittently engages by means of cams (see Figs. 11, 12, not shown) the input shaft 204 which is driven by a belt 203 which is in turn driven by a shaft 192 which is connected by belt 195 to electric motor 187. The upper die 142 is biased downward by an air cylinder 149 and is slidable on columns 145 mounted plate 146 which is fixed to the frame F1 by rods 147. The lower die, carried upon platform 144, slidable along columns 145, is reciprocated by means of levers 188 pivoted to levers 191 fixed to shaft 192. A cam depends downwards from 144 so that upon reciprocation of the platform it engages a pivoted lever which operates a link system (see Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) to advance or retract the deburring tool and rear plate. Thus upon rotating shaft 192 the lower die moves up and belt 199 is moved forward on increment, whilst, further upward movement, the aforesaid cam actuates the link system to advance the deburring tool and rear plate. Further rotation of shaft 192 releases the deburring tool and rear plate, and retracts the lower die to its lowermost position whence another cycle is initiated.
