Abstract

Chlorine-containing polymers are stabilized with compositions comprising calcium, magnesium and zinc salts of benzoic or substituted benzoic acids or aliphatic or alicyclic monocarboxylic acids containing 9, 10 or 11 carbon atoms or mixtures thereof; a polyhydroxy compound having a boiling point of at least 200 DEG C. and containing at least two hydroxyl groups at least one of which is not sterically hindered or an ester thereof containing at least one hydroxyl group which is not sterically hindered; an epoxy compound having a boiling point of at least 200 DEG C. and having a carbon chain in which the number of carbon atoms does not exceed 42; and a sulphur compound having a boiling point of at least 200 DEG C. and being represented by the general formula R1-Sx-R2 where x is 1 or 2 and R1 and R2 are hydrogen, hydrocarbon, substituted hydrocarbon or heterocyclic radicals, said substituents being hydroxyl, alkoxy, carboxyl, carboxylate, ketone, aldehyde, amine, mercapto, sulphonic acid or halogen. Specified polymers are polymer of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, cis and trans dichlorethylenes, chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, graft and block polymers of the above monomers, copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, and dioctyl fumarate, and mixtures of vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers with vinyl chloride/dioctyl fumarate copolymers and vinyl chloride/styrene graft copolymers. Many suitable components of the stabilizers are listed and examples describe compositions comprising vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, calcium, magnesium and zinc benzoates and epoxidised soya bean oil with (1) sorbitol and dilauryl thiodiproprionate, (2) pentaerythritol and dilauryl thiodipropionate, (3) glycerol and S-benzyl thioglycolic acid and (4) pentaerythritol and S-benzylthioglycolic acid; pentaerythritol, calcium, magnesium and zinc benzoates, dilauryl thiodipropionate and epoxidised soya bean oil with (5) polyvinyl chloride and (6) a vinyl chloride/styrene graft polymer; vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, calcium, magnesium and zinc benzoates, thiodipropionic acid and epoxidised soya bean oil with (7) 2-hydroxymethyl -2- methyl-1, 3 propanediol, (8) 3,31,5,51-tetramethyl bisphenol A and (9) resorcinol monobenzoate; vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, dilauryl thiodipropionate and epoxidised soya bean oil with (10) calcium, magnesium and zinc salicylates and pentaerythritol and (11) calcium, magnesium and zinc p-chlorobenzoates and glycerol; (12) polyvinyl chloride, acetyl tributylcitrate, laurone, calcium, magnesium and zinc 2,4-dichlorobenzoates, glycerol, dilauryl thiodipropionate and octyl epoxytallate; vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, vinyl chloride/dioctyl fumarate copolymers and dilauryl thiodipropionate with (13) calcium acetyl salicylate, magnesium and zinc p-chlorobenzoates, glycerol and epoxidised soya bean oil, (14) calcium salicylate, magnesium benzoate, zinc p-chlorobenzoate, glycerol and octyl epoxy tallate, (16) calcium butylphthalate, magnesium benzoate and zinc salicylate, glycerol and epoxidised soya bean oil, (17) calcium butyl phthalate, magnesium and zinc benzoates, glycerol and octyl epoxytallate, (18) calcium, magnesium and zinc acetyl salicylates, glycerol and octyl epoxytallate and (19) calcium, magnesium and zinc salts of C9-11 fatty acids, sorbitol and epoxidised soya bean oil; and (15) polyvinyl chloride, calcium acetyl salicylate, magnesium benzoate, zinc p-chlorobenzoate, glycerol, dilauryl thiodipropionate and epoxidised soya bean oil.
