Abstract
977,062. Blasting. J. F. THOMSON. May 2, 1961 [May 3, 1960], No. 15475/60. Heading B3D. Apparatus for blast treating articles, e.g. of synthetic plastic, metal or ceramic material, e.g. for cleaning or removing flash and/or surface etching, comprises an enclosed cabinet having means for supporting and rotating a detachable perforated drum about an axis inclined to a vertical plane, an access door in the cabinet for insertion and removal of the drum, and means for projecting treatment material into the drum during its rotation, the drum having at its upper end a restricted opening through which the treatment material is arranged to be projected forcibly from a blast device which is arranged to be moved out of the way to permit insertion and removal into and from the cabinet of the drum. An enclosed cabinet 1 mounted upon a base 2 has its front constituted by a hinged door 3 provided with an inspection window 5. An electric motor-driving unit 6 incorporating reduction gearing is connected to an inclined shaft 7 supported in a bearing 8 and having secured on it a spider 9 with spring clips 10 to receive and hold a hexagonal drum 11 of perforated metal having at its upper end a restricted opening 12 through which articles are loaded into and unloaded from the drum and through which treatment material is projected from a blast gun 13. The latter is supported by a telescopic arm 14 pivotally mounted at 15 in a bracket 16 secured to the cabinet roof so that the gun can be swung to one side to permit insertion or removal of the drum. The gun is connected by a flexible pipe 17 to a control valve and thence to a source of compressed air, and is also connected by a flexible pipe 19 to a mixer box 20 at the base of a hopper 21 which collects treatment material passing through the perforations of the drum or escaping therefrom. Dust collecting or extracting means may be provided. A timer unit is provided which after a predetermined interval stops the drum motor and/or stops the projection of treatment material as by closing an air valve. The treatment material may be pellets of plastic polymer, dried fruit stones or aluminium oxide.
