Abstract
976,880. Pneumatic springs. IDEAL-STANDARD Ltd. May 10, 1962 [May 12, 1961], No. 18103/62. Heading F2S. [Also in Division B7] A motor vehicle suspension comprises a pneumatic spring, the pressure in which is varied in response to changes in the vehicle height, such changes being used to control a system for heating a liquid whose vapour provides the medium in the pneumatic spring. The system, Fig. 2, comprises a pneumatic spring 4 connected through an expansion chamber 5 and condenser 6 to an evaporator 7 which is heated by water from the vehicle cooling system, the spring 4 being located between sprung and unsprung portions 10 and 11 of the vehicle. The condenser is cooled by a current of air controlled by louvres 8 mechanically connected so as to be opened or closed by changes in height between the parts 10 and 11 of the vehicle. In addition, a valve 9 controlling the flow of heating liquid to the evaporator 7 may be included and operated through a rod 13. When the height of the vehicle diminishes, the louvres 8 are closed and the valve 9 opened to cause an increase in the pressure in the system. The vehicle suspension may include four pneumatic springs, each associated with such a system, the condensers of which are located adjacent the vehicle radiator which is divided into four sections, Fig. 3, each section having a closed circuit through an evaporator 7 controlled by a valve 9.
