At least some of the faces of the trays in a filter press are fitted with contoured grids, the grids having apertures covered by a filter cloth. Filter cakes, e.g. of ceramic material, formed between the trays, are thus formed with inherent lines of weakness along which they are easily separatable into a number of blanks or billets. All trays in the press may have a grid on one face only, or alternate trays may have grids on both faces, or all trays may have a grid of half-depth fitted on both faces. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, filter trays 10, having thicker frame portions 13, are fitted on one face with contoured grids 12, the grid defining a number of apertures 15, Fig. 4. Under filtering pressure, cloth 11 takes up the contour of the grid so that the filter cake is similarly contoured. A wire mesh or perforated grid may be interposed between the faces of the press tray and the contoured grid of the invention.
