Abstract

A process for blending incompatible polymers having acid numbers of at least 15, comprises reacting at least some of the acid groups of said polymers with an oxide or hydroxide of an alkali or alkaline earth metal and then mixing the treated polymers, e.g. by masticating or by mixing solutions or emulsions. The polymers used may be derived from unsaturated monomers such that at least 2% of copolymerizable acid is used, or may be linear polyesters or oil-modified alkyd resins derived from an excess of acid or subsequently treated with acidic (e.g. phthalic anhydride). In examples blends are derived from polymers and resins selected from copolymers of styrene/acrylic acid, methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid, vinyl toluene/acrylic acid, rubbery butadiene/acrylonitrile/methacrylic acid, vinyl toluene/methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid, dehydrated castor oil-glyceryl alkyd, tall oil fatty acid-glyceryl alkyd, coconut oil-pentaerythritol alkyd, and diethylene glycol/excess adipic acid polyester; using basic materials selected from the hydroxides of Na, Li, K, Ba, Ca, and Sr, and Ca or Ba oxides. The products find application as coating compositions.
