Boards of wood, plywood, wood chips and fibrous materials, and slabs of concrete, stone or hard foam plastics are surfaced with fibrereinforced coatings of polyacrylic or polymethacrylic resins in which the reinforcement is completely embedded. The surface to be coated may first be sealed, preferably with material similar to the coating composition, preferably a solution of the polymers in the corresponding monomers, and may be roughed. The reinforcement may comprise woven, knitted or matted glass or synthetic resin fibres. Moderate pressures, and temperatures up to 100‹ C. may be used, and the surface of the resin may be covered during curing with a strippable polyterephthalate foil and/or a metal plate. Suitable resins mentioned are methyl methacrylate copolymerized with ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, ethyl-hexyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, ethyl-hexyl acrylate or dodecylacrylate, with or without cross-linking agents such as allyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or triallyl cyanurate. Catalysts such as benzoyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide and azodiisobutyric acid dinitrile and sulphur-containing regulators such as mercaptans or their derivatives may be included in the compositions. Redox catalysts, including organic sulphur compounds, cupric compounds and chlorides of organic bases may also be used. The surface of the resin may be embossed and/or the fibrous filler may be dyed or printed. The products, or the substrates before surfacing, may be shaped.
