Abstract

974,651. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 25, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962], No. 3235/63. Heading H1D. A glass cathode-ray tube, e.g. a television tube is protected against implosion by two annular members 3 and 4, at least one of which, 4, is made from a hard insulating material and serves as a surrounding mask for the display area of the tube, the space between the annular members 3 and 4 and the wall of the tube being filled by a material 8 introduced in a castable or mouldable state, and which sets to form a hard non-elastic coherent mass. This arrangement prevents a crack in the display area of the tube spreading to the side of the tube, giving an implosion, but instead the crack terminates at the start of the material 8, allowing a slow ingress of air. A metallic band (not shown) may be embedded in the insulating material, e.g. under the member 4, and may be earthed through lug 7. The material 8 may be, e.g., a horn material from cows' or horses' hoofs, or asphalt, or gypsum or cement.
