Abstract

A process for the recovery of chromate and/or dichromate values from an aqueous solution containing said values comprises contacting said solution with a water-immiscible organic phase comprising a solution of a secondary or tertiary amine in a water-immiscible organic solvent in order to extract said values into the organic phase, separating the resultant chromium-pregnant organic phase from the aqueous phase and recovering the chromate and/or dichromate values from the organic phase. The stripping is preferably effected by the use of an aqueous solution of an inorganic acid, base or salt, and the resultant aqueous solution may be treated to yield chromic acid. The initial aqueous solution containing chromate and/or dichromate values may be chromic acid solution from rinses in chromium electroplating processes. The aqueous concentrate obtained by stripping the organic phase is preferably passed through an ion-exchange membrane or a cation exchange column to give chromic acid which may be recycled to a plating bath in the case when the original solution was derived from an electroplating process. Examples are given.ALSO:A process for the recovery of chromate and/or dichromate values from an aqueous solution containing said values comprises contacting said solution with a water-immiscible organic phase comprising a solution of a secondary or tertiary amine in a water-immiscible organic solvent in order to extract said values into the organic phase, separating the resultant chromium-pregnant organic phase from the aqueous phase and recovering the chromate and/or dichromate values from the organic phase. Preferred amines are those in which the hydrocarbon groups each contain 7-22 carbon atoms. The amine may be used in the form of a salt with an inorganic acid. The organic phase preferably contains a longchain aliphatic alcohol or a phosphorus acid ester as a conditioner. The recovery of the chromate and/or dichromate values from the organic phase is preferably effected by the use of an aqueous solution of a stripping agent such as an inorganic acid, base or salt, and the resultant aqueous solution may be treated to yield chromic acid solution (see Division C1). Examples are given.
