974,116. Abrasive sheets. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 28, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 45840/61. Heading C4V. [Also in Division B2] Glass-paper substitutes are made by coating with an adherent coating containing powdered glass or other abrasives oriented and unoriented olefin polymer or copolymer films which have been subjected to a surface oxidizing treatment and anchor-coated with a solution or dispersion of an amine-formaldehyde thermosetting resin (i.e. a resin obtained by condensing formaldehyde and an amino compound such as used, thiourea, melamine or guanamine and resins of this type modified, e.g. by etherification with a lower alkanol in the presence of a strong acid catalyst) and a quantity up to 75% by weight of the anchor-coating dry weight of an alkyd resin derived from phthalic acid, the amineformaldehyde resin being substantially insoluble in water and compatible with the alkyd resin, drying off the anchor-coating and thereafter applying an aqueous dispersion of a heatsealable coating polymer which is dried off under conditions such that the amine-formaldehyde thermosetting resin layer becomes adhesively bonded to the base and coating films. The thermosetting resin layer may comprise an acid curing catalyst and a plasticizer e.g. a polymethylene glycol aliphatic dicarboxylic acid polyester which may be modified with a fatty acid. The heat-sealable coating may comprise cationic surface-active agents having antistatic properties (examples are given), antioxidants, dyes, pigments, lubricants, antiblocking agents, U.V. light stabilizers and slip agents of either the waxy or comminuted solid type. Specified heat sealable coating polymers are copolymers of vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile (preferred), P.V.A., partially hydrolysed P.V.A., copolymers of butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene and methylmethacrylate, copolymers of methacrylic acid and methyl methacrylate, co-polyesters of terephthalic acid and another dicarboxylic acid with a glycol, vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride/alkyl acrylate, vinyl acetate/ethylene and vinyl chloride/ ethylene copolymers. The surface oxidation of the polyolefin film may be achieved by the known chemical or physical means, e.g. treatment with H 2 SO 4 , HNO 3 , chromic acid, ozone, halogens under free radical forming conditions or exposure to corona discharge ionizing radiation (U.V., X-, α-, #- or γ-rays) in the presence of oxygen.
