Abstract

In a control device, e.g. for a laundry washing machine, cam surfaces of the required lengths may be built up using identical cam elements H, of a hard-wearing material such as a superpolyamide, carried on a member A movable at a constant speed and having two sets of parallel grooves B, C, extending respectively transversely and longitudinally of its -direction of motion, the elements resiliently but firmly engaging in the intersections of the grooves. The member A may be a rotating drum, as shown, or a linearly moving flat plate member. Each cam element E comprises a longitudinal channel section F with flanges G, transverse wings I at one end, and a fin H along the top of the channel section, the top of fin H forming the cam surface. The grooves B are equispaced, their pitch conveniently being the distance moved in one minute, and the length of each element E equals the pitch of grooves B. When an element E is pushed into position, the wings I engage in a transverse groove B, and the flanges F engage in square undercuts D at the base of a groove C. If necessary, part of the fin H of an element E at the end of a cam section may be cut off to provide the required length of cam. Scales L, M may be provided parallel to grooves C to assist in setting up the cam surfaces.
