Abstract
A coated sheet material consisting of at least two layers of different plastics is produced by applying aqueous dispersions of the different plastics to a smooth support, and drying in succession thereon under temperature conditions such that each plastic coalesces to form a homogeneous layer and the coated sheet material is thereafter removed from the support. The aqueous dispersions may be applied to the support by disseminating them in the air in the form of fine particles, charging the particles in a high voltage electrostatic field and causing the charged particles to deposit on the support, which is oppositely charged. The process may be carried out on a continuously moving support, the successive operations of applying and drying the dispersions being carried out in a continuous manner in successive zones distributed along the length of the support, and the coated sheet material is removed from the end of the support. The support may be an endless belt which is heated over at least a part of its run, and the coated sheet material is removed from a terminal portion of the heated run. The coated sheet material may be stretched after production or between the formation of successive layers. Plastics referred to are vinylidene chlorideacrylic acid methyl ester, and butadieneacrylonitrile copolymers.
