Abstract

Isotactic polystyrene of molecular weight in excess of 1,000,000 has its molecular weight reduced and crystallisation tendency increased by treatment for 0.1-10 sec. in an extruder with a screw speed of 300-5,000 r.p.m. in which the polystyrene is melted without the application of external heat and solely through frictional heat. The molten polymer may be passed through a screw degasser and may be obtained in the form of granules.
