971,601. Recording television signals. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 24,1962 [April 26, 1961], No. 15558/62. Heading G5R. Video-frequency signals are satisfactorily recorded on and played back from audio-frequency grade tapes by recording the same carrier,frequency modulated by the video signals on to two tracks of the same or associated tapes, mixing the outputs on playback in proportion to their respective playback amplitudes and limiting the mixture to a predetermined level. At the transducing speeds involved, each track may be affected by drop-outs &c. up to 3% in the system, but the combined output will only be subject to the product of these effects, namely 0.1%. Where one tape is used, the two recordings are preferably separated physically by half of one picture element, so that the same tape fault affects only one track but the tracks are not differentially phase-affected by tape stretch or shrinkage.
