Abstract
971,214. Modified copolymers. MONSANTO CO. March 20, 1961 [March 18, 1960; June 8, 1960], No. 10027/61. Heading C3P. A modified copolymer is produced by polymerizing 90 to 10 parts of a monoethylenically unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbon and 10 to 90 parts of acrylonitrile and/or methacrylonitrile together with 0À05 to 5 % of a menthadiene or a bicyclic terpene hydrocarbon in which at least one of the carbon atoms of a double bond is free from hydrogen atoms. The menthadiene may be limonene, pseudolimonene, a para-menthadiene, phellandrene, sylvestrene, terpinene, terpinolene, terpineol or pyronene and the bicyclic, terpene may be camphene, a fenchene, pinene, carene, salinene or thujene. Polymerization may be in emulsion or suspension using catalysts such as di-t-butyl peroxide, di-isopropyl-benzene peroxide or potassium persulphate, and surface active agents such as acrylic acid/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate copolymer and sodium stearate.
