Abstract

970,689. Picture &c. mounts. LANGAN APERTURE CARDS Inc. March 19, 1963 [April 30, 1962], No. 10765/63. Heading A4X. [Also in Division G2] Record cards 5 of fibrous material, which are apertured for mounting microfilm or like transparencies, are made by indenting cards 5 on one face 18 around the proposed aperture so that embossed projections 19 are formed on the other face, and subsequently removing embossed projections 19. Cards 5 are passed in succession from a stack 1, first between rollers 3, 4 to be embossed by dies 6 with a rectangular or other outline, then between rollers 9, 10 where the embossed projections 19 are removed by the grinding wheel 10 with the card 5 supported on disc-like supports 11 on the upper roller 9, and finally between rollers 12, 13, the roller 13 carrying an applicator 14 which applies a quick-drying solution of thermoplastic bonding agent from a bath 16 to the embossed and ground surface in the desired pattern. The rectangular central portion 22 is punched out to form an aperture surrounded by thin web portions 20 impregnated and coated by a layer 23 of thermoplastic bonding. A film comprising a base 29 coated with emulsion 30 is applied by a pressure plate 31 to the card simultaneously with the softening of the bonding layer 23 by heating coils 28 in a support 27 on a table 26, the webs 20 and film being forced downwardly in the aperture to a position in which the emulsion side 30 of the film is flush with the upper surface of the card and the base 29 is bonded to the webs 20 which are flush with the lower surface of the card.
